Mathilde was born in Bois, one among a family of many boisterous children. Her busy parents more or less left her to her own devices, and she spent her childhood running around the village and the woods of Bois with her brothers and sisters, swimming in the lakes around Bois, and climbing trees with her siblings.
When Mathilde entered her teens and the subject of an apprenticeship came up, she decided to follow some of her older siblings to Genua. Her unusual looks and her natural grace earned her a highly paid job in the casino as a dancer, and before she turned seventeen she was the highest paid performer in the casino of Genua. A love affair with a young Coffee Nostra family member ensued shortly after, and Mathilde thought herself happy and well settled.
When she was asked by her boyfriend for a favour, she agreed without guessing that he was putting her in danger. She sometimes ran 'errands' and dropped a parcel off at an address once in a while on her way home from work. This went on for a few months until one day, she arrived at the address to find the place in chaos, and her contact dead. She fled to her boyfriend in terror, only to find him dead as well, where she had left him not half an hour ago. With trembling fingers she opened the parcel, only to find in it jewels. Filled with a premonition of the danger she herself was in, she fled Genua and went to Ankh-Morpork, for where else but in Ankh-Morpork can the ones who wish to stay hidden hide.
Mathilde can never return to her home town but if she wants answers as to what happened, she has to.
Mathilde had a happy and busy childhood in Bois. She comes from a large family, and has many brothers and sisters, some of whom live in Genua, and some others who never left Bois. Her parents are honest and hard working people and they live in Bois.
