Personal Story

Born and raised amid the shifting sands of the desert, Ata (whose name means 'cherished one') was the long-awaited daughter of sensible but traditional D'reg parents. Ata and her two older brothers were schooled in the arts of words and warfare by their parents and other D'reg elders.

While her brothers (who both went on to successful careers in the Djelian Palace Guard) excelled with their swords, Ata excelled with her books, much to the dismay of her parents, who felt that she should learn to embrace her D'reg identity and respect her roots. Although Ata constantly tried to please everyone, she eventually learned that she could not please everyone at the same time. As she became more and more miserable, she kept her own voice stilled while she listened to the voices of others.

When a young man who was part Klatchian and part Morporkian
travelled with the D'regs for a while, Ata briefly fell in love, and was loved in return. Those halcyonic days were a few of the happiest Ata had ever spent in her life. Although their love story was cut short at the end of his travels with the tribe, he promised to return for her some day. Ata would have liked to have believed him, but she did not, and it was with a certain tinge of sadness that she watched him leave.

When her tribe passed the Klatchian Foreign Legion outpost during their travels, Ata packed her books and left to join the legendary fighting unit. Since then her travels have brought her to Ankh-Morpork, where she currently lives and trains. To this day her weapon of choice is not the sword, but the dagger.

Yes, Ata means 'cherished', and she was, but there comes a time in every young woman's life when she has to find out if she is everything she thinks she is, and at the age of nineteen, that time has come for her.
